He had not been widely read during his lifetime, but Mary championed his work after his death and he became substantially more popular. Godwin did not approve of their relationship, not only because of the financial and social turmoil it caused, but he also knew that Percy was irresponsible and prone to volatile moods. They shared journals and discussed their work and edited each other’s writing.
