Having just read the book the day the dvd arrived I was not certain how it would create the atmosphere and tell the story n two hours.
(I say "so far" - as his career is on track to be VERY long) For my money ~ equally important to his outstanding performances - I implicitly trust any of my most beloved books in his hands. It's just "And then this happened... and next this happened... and after that this happened." The film takes us from the first days of the Cuban revolution to the dark days of totalitarian repression of all sexuality and creativity that is not condoned by the state. Good film, Javier Bardem is excellent as always.

It's extremely personal, as it is based on the writer's memoir, but the writer objectively described life in Cuba for everyone as a part of his narration, including the class that supported the revolution. Javier Bardem is great as ever and the movie never disappoints. If you don't know the writing of Reinaldo Arenas its a great place to start - I am completely hooked.
